The Dallas Cowboys are a mess these days, and once again, head coach Mike McCarthy seems to be on the hot seat.
He has faced such speculation before, but now, there actually seems to be a real chance that he will get fired not too long from now.
Quarterback Dak Prescott, who is out for the season with a hamstring injury, has publicly endorsed McCarthy, executive vice president Stephen Jones, the son of owner Jerry Jones, said the whole team has McCarthy’s back.
However, the young Jones also said that the decision on whether to keep McCarthy will be based on more than wins and losses, per Jon Machota.
“I think our whole team endorses Mike McCarthy. He’s got skins on the wall. He’s won a Super Bowl. He’s been in multiple championship games. He knows what it takes to win in this league,” Jones said.
The Cowboys currently have a 5-7 record, and they have a slim chance of making the playoffs.
But they have won two games in a row, including a surprising victory over the Washington Commanders in Week 12 in which Cooper Rush, Prescott’s replacement, completed 24 of 32 pass attempts for 247 yards and two touchdowns.
Dallas has had a long rest since their Thanksgiving Day win over the New York Giants, and they will host the Cincinnati Bengals, another disappointing but talented team, this Monday.
As far as McCarthy’s job security, there has been lots of speculation that perhaps Bill Belichick, the former New England Patriots head coach, could be a good fit for the Cowboys.
However, it remains to be seen if the elder Jones would be willing to share the spotlight with Belichick, or if Belichick would even want the job.
Cowboys Fans React to Stephen Jones’ Latest Mike McCarthy Take
Fans, however, are not too pleased with Stephen Jones’ take. In fact, a number of fans reminded him that while Mike McCarthy is a successful head coach, a lot of his success came before his time with the Cowboys. While McCarthy has guided the Cowboys to the playoffs in the last three years, they were never able to make it past the divisional round. “They keep bringing up he won a Super Bowl yea, but he can’t get you there lol,” a critic said. “They setting us up for this contract they bout to give him lol.”
“‘He’s won a Super Bowl.’ So tired of hearing that,” another one shared. “Funny that NONE of the ‘skins’ Jones mentioned occurred while with the Cowboys,” a commenter added. On the other hand, others shared their disappointment by the team’s seeming unwillingness to make a change despite years of failure. The Cowboys have not made it to the Super Bowl since 1995.
“I hate this entire bloodline,” an angry fan wrote. A disappointed follower added, “The whole Jones family is clueless about fielding a championship caliber NFL team. All they care about is mediocre teams, marketing and make $.” “McCarthy isn’t a great coach but Jerry and Stephen are still the biggest problem,” a social media user further stated. It remains to be seen what the Cowboys will do in the offseason. At 5-7 entering Week 14, they have a slim chance of making it to the postseason. Should Dallas fail to make the playoffs, the fans’ desire to see some changes would only intensify.
