As the regular season is winding down, this Pittsburgh Steeler could be playing the final few games of his tenure with the team.
The Pittsburgh Steelers like every NFL team are nearing the end of the 2024 season but quarterback Justin Fields will become a free agent in March. According to multiple reports, Russell Wilson is winning the starting job as he’s also a free agent but the Steelers will likely sign just Wilson. After reeling in Fields and Wilson, the Steelers made this transition in light of figuring out their quarterback situation but Wilson has been picking up the most leverage despite dealing with an earlier injury this year. However, this leaves Fields in the dark about where he might head in terms of his next team.
Originally selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Ohio State product was hoping to be the long-term signal-caller for the Chicago Bears. Things didn’t work out as the Bears traded him to Pittsburgh and later drafted Caleb Williams to take over the offense to hopefully see some changes on their team. Ian Rapoport believes Wilson is the leading candidate to earn a contract over Fields despite his age. Fields was a solid pickup for the Steelers but after leading the team to 4-2, he hasn’t been able to bring out the best in weapons like uprising star George Pickens.
No one knows what the Steelers will do with Justin Fields since they’re already in the position for a playoff spot. They could use Fields as their starter for the last few games as an audition to see what he has left. No matter the outcome, he should be able to garner interest from several teams so it shouldn’t be long before Fields finds a new team even if it’s a one-year basis again.
Steelers Quarterback Justin Fields Will Be A Free Agent in March
Possible Next Teams
Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers have yet to find their starting quarterback after hoping Bryce Young would have a better second year since having a disastrous rookie season. After losing Diontae Johnson under one year, the Panthers are going into another rebuilding year so they may want to wait before drafting a quarterback. They have no aspirations of doing so but Dave Canales benching Young once this year could signal the Panthers are looking for a new signal-caller this upcoming free agency. Young may be improving but the team could sign Justin Fields on a one-year contract to see how he could fit in the system.
The Panthers may have to take the same route as the Steelers did this season so this may give Canales a better outlook to see if Young is serious about the starting role. Carolina won’t expect Fields to be a prime Cam Newton but make enough plays to connect with new receivers like Xavier Legette and whoever they acquire this upcoming offseason.
New Orleans Saints
Meanwhile, there’s a lot of confusion ongoing with the New Orleans Saints’ future. They claim they won’t be rebuilding after this season but it might be a pathway they have to take to improve their roster. The Saints lost several players to injury like Derek Carr, Chris Olave and Paulson Adebo. However, Olave will become a free agent in March so they have to find a new star receiver while potentially looking for their next quarterback. Rookie Spencer Rattler could receive more playing time next season but since he’s still adjusting to NFL life, it might be better to bring in a one-year quarterback from free agency to hold down the fort.
