The San Francisco 49ers are having a head-scratching season.
For example, despite having the seventh-best offense (23.7 PPG), the 49ers are 6-7 and dead last in the NFC West.
That leads to frustration for some players and star wide receiver Deebo Samuel is one of those.
The star took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to complain about his struggles this season. The 28-year-old has had just one touchdown receiving and one touchdown rushing this season – he had seven and five last season, respectively – and has just 553 receiving yards through 12 games. He finished with 892 receiving yards last season.
“Not struggling at all just not getting the ball!!!!!!!” Samuel posted Monday night, with a shrugging man emoji.
The 49ers won their game on Sunday, 38-18 at home over the Chicago Bears. In the game, Samuel caught just two passes for 22 yards and added five rushes for 13 yards.
The post can be read as a jab at quarterback Brock Purdy.
Soon after the post, up popped X’s “Community Note.”
“He leads the team in drops. He is struggling,” the note declares.
Samuel is third on the team in touches, with 6.0 per game. That’s third overall behind two running backs and first on the 49ers among non-running backs. Samuel is second in total touches with 72. Only Jordan Mason has more total touches than Samuel, with 164, and Christian McCaffrey has 65 touches.
The six-year veteran has seen career lows with 5.33 targets and 46.1 receiving yards per game this season. He has caught 40 of 64 targets.
Samuel tied with Darius Slayton, Jerry Jeudy, and Ja’Marr Chase for the sixth-most drops in the league so far this season with five. The wide receiver also leads the 49ers in drops.
In response to the criticism of his post on X, Samuel added: “Just cause I voice my opinions don’t mean I’m hating on any of my teammates!!”
The 49ers host the Los Angeles Rams (7-6) on ‘Thursday Night Football” this week. The Rams’ defense allows a whopping 225.1 passing yards per game, so Samuel has a chance for a breakout performance this week.
Kyle Shanahan has advice for Deebo Samuel; calls his tweet ‘water under the bridge’
Deebo Samuel tweeted that he wasn’t struggling on Monday and that his lack of production was due to not getting the ball. Anything any player posts on social media will be taken out of context, and this comment is no different.
Shanahan was asked about Deebo, and he said the two talk daily: “Deebo and I talk every day. I understand Deebo saying that. The only way he helps us out is by getting the ball more. We’d like to get it to him more, and we’ll continue to work at that.”
Running to social media to say you want more touches the day after your team scores 38 points isn’t a good look. Shanahan does not believe Samuel’s words are a distraction inside the building:
“We’d always love things to stay in-house. I’m sure I’d get worked up to if I was reading stuff about myself all the time.
Is it a distraction in our building? No. It’s the first time I’ve talked about it is right here. Deebo and I see each other every day and talk about stuff every day. My advice is to not outside frustrate ya. Just answering those things isn’t going to help you in anyway. It usually hurts you.
But as far as what we deal with and our relationship and our team, it’s water under the bridge.”
