During NFL combine week, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter broke the news on Saturday that Samuel will reportedly be traded to the Washington Commanders for a fifth-round draft pick when the new league year begins on March 12.

Samuel made his first trade request to the 49ers in 2021 following an All-Pro season of 1,770 scrimmage yards and 14 total touchdowns. He ended up agreeing to stay on a three-year, $71.5 million contract extension that ran through 2025.

With one year left on that contract at the end of the tumultuous 2024 season in San Francisco, Samuel once again asked out. He made his trade request to the 49ers public through Schefter on Super Bowl Sunday.

Last season, he recorded just 806 total yards (lowest of any healthy season in his career) and four total touchdowns as the Niners finished 6-11, last in the NFC West.

However, the news of a fresh start with the Commanders, who made it to the 2024 NFC championship, left Samuel unable to contain his excitement.

“Best in the business!!!!!” he wrote on his Instagram story less than an hour after the trade news surfaced.

Samuel was responding to his agent, Tory Dandy, who had shared the news on his own account and said, “the Commanders are getting a real one.”

Dandy certainly found a good landing spot for his client. Samuel joins a talented group of playmakers at Washington offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury’s disposal around quarterback Jayden Daniels, who was the 2024 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
