Schottenheimer’s team and the Cowboys finally came to an agreement on terms Friday evening after two extensive interviews earlier this week, the team said.
“Brian Schottenheimer is known as a career assistant,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told ESPN. “He ain’t Brian no more. He is now known as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys.”
Schottenheimer, the son of NFL coaching legend Marty Schottenheimer, has served as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator for the last two seasons.
The 51-year-old Schottenheimer has never been a head coach.
The Cowboys say they will officially introduce Schottenheimer at a press conference next Monday at 11 a.m.
Brian Schottenheimer’s Time in Dallas
Dig deeper:
Schottenheimer has worked for the Cowboys for the last three seasons. He was hired as a consultant under Mike McCarthy in 2022.
McCarthy broke into the NFL as a coach under Marty Schottenheimer in 1993.
After the Cowboys parted ways with Kellen Moore after the 2023 season, Schottenheimer was promoted to the offensive coordinator role.
McCarthy called plays for the Cowboys during Schottenheimer’s tenure as offensive coordinator.
In Schottenheimer’s first year as OC, Dak Prescott had his best season as a pro. The Cowboys offense was first in scoring during the season.
In 2024, the offense struggled. Prescott’s injury made took things from bad to worse, finishing the season 21st in scoring.

Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Interviews
Schottenheimer was just one of the candidates who the Cowboys brought in for an interview.
Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier also interviewed for the job.
Both Moore and Schottenheimer had previous experience with the Cowboys. But the team says “it was Schottenheimer who boasted the much lengthier resume of overall coaching experience between the two though, despite having not called plays in Dallas during the McCarthy era.”
