Earlier this week, the Kansas City Chiefs suggested that they were in almost perfect health as a team as they are heading into Super Bowl LIX on Sunday in New Orleans.
Now comes a Friday report that confirms that good KC news.
It was head coach Andy Reid who had given a promising update on the state of the health of his AFC championship team, telling the media that the Chiefs are as healthy as can be.
And so we are down to one Patrick Mahomes weapon who seems unlikely to play as the only player that is “doubtful” is wide receiver Skyy Moore. The backup pass-catcher was limited in practice all week. … and in NFL parlance, “doubtful” usually results in the player not participating on game day.
The Chiefs, over the course of the year, dealt with injuries – just like every other team.
But now? They are no longer “just like any other team.” Only the Philadelphia Eagles are “like” them … and the only two teams with health issues that really matter are these two.
The Chiefs, who are set to play in their third consecutive Super Bowl this Sunday and can become the first team to win back-to-back-to-back Super Bowls, had some late-season concerns with none other than Mahomes.
But his ankle issue is long-forgotten.
This is all monumental news for the Chiefs heading into the year’s biggest game. Late in the year, the Chiefs – who won 15 games during the regular season and beat the Texans and then the Bills to win the AFC – had concerns with Mahomes’ ankle, among other things.
But now?
The Big Game on Sunday will be a rematch of Super Bowl LVII from two years ago, when the Chiefs beat the Eagles 38-35. That was a classic game, and this one can be as well, with KC favored by just one point.
Kickoff will be on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. CT on FOX. Kevin Burkhardt and Tom Brady will be on the call. But most importantly for coach Reid’s Chiefs?
They have a chance to be fortified by coaching and by talent … and, it appears, by the good fortune of good health at the very most critical time of an NFL season.
