Baltimore Ravens fans weren’t the only NFL fanbase feeling queasy after seeing Mark Andrews drop what would have been a game-tying catch against the Buffalo Bills today. Dallas Cowboys fans were having some terrifying flashbacks of their own.
After Andrews’ drop following a touchdown that brough the game within two points, a number of longtime Cowboys fans took to X and admitted that his drop reminded them of an infamous play involving a legendary tight end of their own, Jackie Smith.

In Super Bowl XIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith dropped a third-down pass in the end zone from Cowboys quarterback Staubach. Had he caught the ball, the game would have been tied at 21-21. Instead, the Cowboys were forced to settle for a field goal. At the time of the drop, the announcer of the game famously declared that Smith must be “the sickest man in America.”
Smith’s drop was ultimately the difference in the entire game as the Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl, 35-31. It would be the final game of Smith’s career, and he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

“As a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan growing up, I just had a cruel flashback to Jackie Smith,” NFL writer Ian O’Connor wrote on X.
“I remember Jackie Smith,” another Cowboys fan lamented.
“Oof. Andrews just went full Jackie Smith. Never go full Jackie Smith,” a third fan wrote.
“I know I’m old. I know it’s not the Super Bowl. And I know it wasn’t the same kind of play. But the first thing I thought of there was Jackie Smith,” wrote a fourth.
Much like Smith, Mark Andrews ranks among the best tight ends in the NFL today. He’s a three-time Pro Bowler and earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2021.
But the success that Andrews has often enjoyed in the regular season has largely failed to follow him into the playoffs. In seven career playoff games, he has 24 receptions for 254 yards and has yet to score a touchdown.
After today’s performance against the Bills, he must be the sickest man in team history.
