It is time to firmly put Mike McDaniel on the hot seat. Too many times McDaniel has made errors which have cost the Miami Dolphins, and is now why they find themselves at 5-7 coming off a 30-17 loss to the Green Bay Packers. McDaniel is not capable of leading the Dolphins and the issues are too glaring to ignore.
In McDaniel’s first season, he made a strong impression with bringing a modernized offensive approach to the Dolphins. This resulted in winning his rookie head coaching debut against the New England Patriots, and helped the Dolphins beat the Buffalo Bills for the first time since 2018. They went 9-8 in 2022, resulting in the Dolphins first playoff appearance since 2016. They would lose to the Bills with Skylar Thompson at quarterback, but the season provided hope for what the future could turn into under McDaniel. The hype carried over into 2023 as the Dolphins started strong. This included a 70-point performance against the Denver Broncos. They would go 11-6, but once again lost in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Three seasons in, McDaniel is still making rookie head coach mistakes, showing his inexperience and showcasing he wasn’t ready to be a head coach. In games the best head coaches are able to make in-game adjustments on the fly, for McDaniel he has yet to show he can do that. The offense under McDaniel is built on speed, which at first was hard to game plan for. As time has gone on, opponents have figured out ways to take that speed factor away by limiting the field, and McDaniel has failed to adjust to this. For an offensive minded coach, his offense falling apart without Tua Tagovailoa sparks some doubt about whether he can truly lead the Dolphins through even tough times.
There is speculation that McDaniel is losing the locker room, with many players questioning his leadership. The Dolphins are viewed as soft, and that is why they need to make a coaching change
That head coach to replace him should be We Welker. As it currently stands, Welker is the current wide receivers coach of the Dolphins, but before spent 12 seasons in the NFL. Six of those seasons were on the New England Patriots where he was coached under Bill Belichick and won two Super Bowls.
Welker would know the culture necessary to build a championship team. He would also be able to keep some of the same offensive philosophies that have led to success but be able to get the most out of the talent with bringing a players perspective.
