Why Odell Beckham Jr. Was Let Go: Mike McDaniel Gives the Inside Scoop

The Miami Dolphins have officially closed the chapter on Odell Beckham Jr.’s brief tenure with the team, marking an unexpected end to what was hoped to be a strategic offensive addition.

After being absent from practice for two consecutive days due to personal reasons, the wide receiver’s departure was confirmed.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel described the move as mutually beneficial.

“It’s as simple as, what’s the best for both him and the team moving forward. We just thought it was a good time to go that direction. … When you communicate transparently, I can kinda know where he’s at,” McDaniel said, via FinsXtra.

The journey began in the offseason when Beckham signed a one-year contract worth up to $8.25 million, joining a dynamic receiving group that already featured Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

However, Beckham’s path was immediately complicated by offseason knee surgery, which placed him on the reserve/PUP list to start the season.

His debut came in Week 5 against the New England Patriots, and his subsequent performances failed to meet expectations, with just nine catches for 55 yards in nine games played.

He was on the field for fewer than 32 percent of Miami’s offensive snaps in each game, a stark contrast to the impact the Dolphins had hoped he would deliver.

In the meantime, tight end Jonnu Smith emerged as a more effective third option behind Hill and Waddle, so far posting 61 catches for 692 yards in his first season with the team.

Beckham’s struggle to integrate into the Dolphins’ offensive scheme ultimately led to this mutual parting of ways.
