New sleeper team emerges as a threat to sign Russell Wilson

It certainly seems like Russell Wilson wants to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but questions remain if they can put aside their differences and come to an agreement on a contract. Wilson struggled over the last five games of the season but still put up 15 touchdowns to just 5 interceptions, bringing the offense to its highest peak.

However, while most of the talk is about Justin Fields’ likely strong market, it appears that Wilson might have some suitors, too. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN points to the New York Giants as a sleeper team that could come in and swoop Wilson away from the Steelers if he hits the open market.

“The New York Giants I’m hearing are a potential sneaky team for Russell Wilson. So both quarterbacks are going to have options. But their first choice is probably the Steelers, and the Steelers are going to have to make that call over the next month,” Fowler said.

The Giants released Daniel Jones during the season and have no answer on the roster. Signing Wilson feels more like a win-now move than where they stand, but head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are in a tough spot and have to make something happen to keep their jobs.

If they believe that Wilson can be the needle mover, it is not crazy to think about that as his landing spot. Fowler also mentioned the Las Vegas Raiders, who hired Wilson’s former head coach in Seattle, Pete Carroll, as another landing spot for the Steelers’ signal-caller.
