PITTSBURGH — Minkah Fitzpatrick is going to the Pro Bowl for the fifth time in his career. Since the Pittsburgh Steelers traded for him from the Miami Dolphins in 2019, Fitzpatrick has taken the NFL by storm and been one of the top safeties in the NFL.
However, this season has been a down one for him. He has one interception, but has not created much splash outside of that. Even in the last few weeks, Fitzpatrick is making uncharacteristic mistakes.
So, when the Steelers told him he was selected to the Pro Bowl again, he even admitted that he was a little surprised.
Most of the leg work was done by the players and coaches, as Fitzpatrick did not finish in the top three for safeties in AFC fan voting. That means that fellow safeties and position coaches still highly regard Fitzpatrick’s work.
Fitzpatrick says that his role has not lent itself to those splash plays, but he has done plenty of good things while capping the top of the defense for the Steelers.
Teams still have avoided Fitzpatrick simply because he is in a certain area of the field this year, which has capped his ability to make splash plays consistently. Add on the recent communication issues, and Fitzpatrick’s chances to make plays have been few and far between.
