Russell Wilson Explains Why Steelers’ Offense is Struggling: What’s Going Wrong?

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have struggled in the red zone over the last few weeks. Pittsburgh has plummeted to the 30th-ranked red zone offense. Meanwhile, the short-yardage offense has been just as putrid.

On top of all that, Pittsburgh is the worst offense on first down, averaging just 4.1 yards per play over the season. The Steelers have run the third most third down plays in the NFL, and while they have been shockingly proficient in those areas, the Steelers would like to get conversions on earlier downs.

So, what is causing these issues? Russell Wilson believes the Steelers are close to solving those issues that plague them, but they must stop hurting themselves with penalties.

“I think the thing is we just got to stay on schedule first and second down,” Wilson said. “We’ve got to make plays and we’ve got to find plays, and I don’t think we’re far off. I definitely don’t think that. I think we played two tough games over the past two weeks and I believe in us. I know how capable we are and I’m looking forward to it.”
The Bengals’ offense is hot coming into this game against the Steelers. However, they have allowed the sixth-most points in the NFL defensively. Pittsburgh should have a chance to exploit the Bengals’ defense.

Yet, can they turn those explosive plays into touchdowns? The Steelers will have to tell that story.

“I think we study just everything,” Wilson said. “I think we study the things we’ve done well. I think that’s the first thing and do more of it. I think that’s one thing. I think the second thing is figure out where we’re missing. We’ve had a lot of third-and-longs down there it seems like, and so we’ve got to make sure that we’re giving ourselves the best chance to run all of our red zone plays that we practice and do everything that we are prepared to do.”
Pittsburgh is looking to improve to 9-3 to hold onto their lead in the AFC North before a gauntlet of games in December. Turning those drives into seven points will play a huge part in stacking wins.
