There have been many reasons the San Francisco 49ers have plunged to a 6-10 record this season, including, but not limited to, a massive rash of injuries that has infiltrated every corner of their roster.
One of their many problems has been the play of special teams, and a significant part of that problem has been starting kicker Jake Moody. Moody, a third-round draft pick in 2023, had a solid rookie season by making 84.0 percent of his field goal attempts and all but one of his 61 extra-point tries. But Niners Faithful started to doubt him when he missed an extra point attempt in last season’s Super Bowl, a game that was decided by the smallest of margins.
This season, he has, at times, been abysmal. The Niners led on Monday 21-13 against the Detroit Lions and had a real shot at victory. But Moody missed two field goals and an extra point, and it seems as if that may have been the final straw for him.
Former 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman echoed the sentiment of many members of the Faithful when he said Moody “has to go.”
Richard Sherman keeps it real about Jake Moody:
“Jake Moody has to go at this point. I know fans are so sensitive because we’re in a day & age where everybody gets a participation trophy & no you don’t talk bad about anybody, but you gotta do your job.”pic.twitter.com/PT72V8BIaI

On the season, Moody is just 71.9 percent on field-goal tries, and he has only made nine of 18 attempts from 40 yards or further. Kickers are sometimes overlooked by fans, unless, of course, they aren’t getting the job done, but they’re an essential part of an NFL team’s offense.
Finding a major upgrade over him has to be pretty high on San Francisco’s to-do list this offseason.
