Chiefs Defender Backstabs KC to Sign With Chargers in New Prediction

It’s never too early to start thinking about the offseason, especially given how many key Chiefs are pending free agents. Unfortunately, one new projection sees beloved safety Justin Reid joining the Chargers in a stunning move.

Reid has become one of the leaders of this defense, setting a physical tone while making a large impact on the Kansas City community. He’s one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL though, so it’d fit with general manager Brett Veach’s track record to let him walk.

Should Reid find a new team in 2025, it’d be a major blow to see him walk to a division rival in Los Angeles.

Justin Reid Spurns Chiefs for Chargers in New Free Agency Prediction

Bleacher Report recently released free agency projections for each major player. They have Reid joining the Chargers to stay in the AFC West.

“Justin Reid isn’t playing at an elite level, but he’s a steady veteran who the Chargers could use,” Bleacher Report writes. “(Jesse) Minter’s defense has been at its best with three safeties on the field, so Derwin James can be free to make plays. Reid would allow them to do that.”

Reid’s versatility is one of his best attributes, even serving as the Chiefs’ emergency kicker. He could fit into any defense, even if he’s not quite playing to his standard this year.

So far in 2024, Reid has 68 tackles, five deflected passes, and an interception. He’s struggled in pass coverage though, surrendering an 82.2% completion percentage and 125.5 passer rating when targeted. Considering Kansas City drafted Bryan Cook and Jaden Hicks over the last two years, it’s likely that Reid will be looking for a new home this offseason unless he’s willing to take a pay cut.

With the Chargers rebuilding themselves in Jim Harbaugh’s image, Reid’s physicality would be a perfect fit.

Here’s hoping he stays far away from the Chiefs’ rivals though, because seeing the two-time defending Super Bowl champion on an enemy sideline would certainly hurt.
