Unexpected Superstar: Ex-Steelers Cornerback’s Unlikely Super Bowl LIX Debut!

The Pittsburgh Steelers fell short of their Super Bowl goal this season, and although making the playoffs, ended the year with more of a thud than a bang.
But one former Steelers player will enjoy taking the field in New Orleans on Sunday.
Former Steelers cornerback Steven Nelson was elevated to the Kansas City Chiefs’ active roster and will be available for Andy Reid’s team inside the Superdome.

The Chiefs announced the move on X on Saturday and included linebacker Swayze Bozeman in the announcement too.

Nelson announced his retirement from the NFL last June, but was coerced out of retirement by the Chiefs and signed to their practice squad in December.

The 32-year-old has not appeared in a game all season, so it’s unlikely he’ll see the field barring a major injury situation for Kansas City, but it’s still a huge brag

Nelson was originally drafted by the Chiefs in 2015 after a collegiate career at Oregon State. The cornerback remained with the Chiefs through 2018 before signing as a free agent with the Steelers.

The former Beaver played for the Eagles in 2021. Nelson played for Pittsburgh in the 2019 and 2020 seasons, appearing in 30 games combined.

But he tallied 109 tackles, three picks and two fumble recoveries.

The Chiefs and Eagles kick off Super Bowl LIX on Sunday with Kansas City having the opportunity to make NFL history as the first team to win three straight Super Bowls.
