The Kansas City Chiefs have their eyes firmly set on the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round at Arrowhead, with no thought of what “might be” in their three-peat chase.
Having had the first-round bye thanks to clinching the No. 1 seed, the Chiefs are well-rested and looking forward to finally getting out and playing meaningful football; after all, it’s been over three weeks since all the starters played.
So, that can be a little bit of a challenge. After such an extended break, pick up where you left off three weeks ago, but that is what’s in front of Kansas City right now.
But what is head coach Andy Reid looking for his team to do vs. the Texans?
“It’s always physical football,” Reid said, revealing the one thing he wants. “You want to eliminate mistakes, make sure that you stay accurate, and then play hard. Then you let the chips fall where they may.”
There can be no doubt there’s aura around the Chiefs at this time of year, and given they’ve won back-to-back Super Bowls, and have been to at least the AFC Championship in every year Patrick Mahomes has started, there’s an inevitability about the AFC powerhouse.
That is what the Texans have to overcome, and in their Week 16 clash, the Chiefs won a tight contest 27-19, so Houston will have some confidence that it can roll into Arrowhead Stadium and end the Chiefs’ three-peat chances.
But if Kansas City ticks off every item on Reid’s wishlist, then we imagine that the race for three straight Super Bowls will be well and truly on.
